NDA vs TES — Which Army Technical Entry Should You Choose? (2026)

Both NDA and TES (Technical Entry Scheme) lead to a commission in the Indian Army — but through very different doors. NDA is a UPSC exam after Class 12 open to Army, Navy and Air Force. TES is a direct Army technical entry for PCM students who have cleared Class 12 and JEE Main. This page compares every dimension so you can decide which route fits your age, stream and career goal.
NDA vs TES (10+2) — at a glance
| Attribute | NDA | TES (10+2) |
|---|---|---|
| Conducting body | UPSC (twice a year) | Indian Army (twice a year, notification-based) |
| Eligibility (age) | 16½ – 19½ years | 16½ – 19½ years (as per notification) |
| Educational qualification | Class 12 (PCM for Navy/Air Force) | Class 12 with PCM + valid JEE Main score |
| Services offered | Army, Navy, Air Force | Indian Army only (Technical Arms — Engineers, Signals, EME, etc.) |
| Written exam | UPSC NDA — Maths + GAT | No separate written exam; merit on JEE Main + Class 12 % |
| SSB interview | 5-day SSB at any Services Selection Board | 5-day SSB — identical process |
| Training | 3 years NDA + 1 year IMA/AFA/INA | 1 year at OTA Gaya (Technical) then corps training |
| Commission type | Permanent Commission | Permanent Commission |
| Best fit for | Students open to any service or unsure of branch | PCM students certain about Army technical arms |
When TES makes more sense than NDA
If you are a PCM student with a strong JEE Main score, TES skips the UPSC written entirely and gets you to SSB faster. You train specifically for Army technical arms — Engineers, Signals, EME — without spending three years at NDA first. For candidates who know they want Army engineering, TES is often the shorter path.
When NDA is the better bet
NDA keeps all three services open. If you might prefer the Air Force or Navy, or want the four-year academy grounding at Khadakwasla, NDA is unmatched. NDA also does not depend on JEE Main cut-offs, which fluctuate every TES cycle.
SSB preparation — identical tasks, same calibration
Both entries face the same 5-day SSB: PPDT screening, TAT/WAT/SRT/SD psychology, GTO tasks and Personal Interview. TES candidates are often slightly older (18–19) with more technical confidence — use that in PI without sounding arrogant.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for both NDA and TES in the same year?
Yes — the exams are independent. Many PCM students attempt NDA (UPSC written + SSB) and TES (JEE-based merit + SSB) in parallel. Clearing both gives you options at the merit stage.
Is TES easier than NDA?
TES has no UPSC written, but JEE Main cut-offs and vacancy numbers are highly competitive. SSB difficulty is identical. Neither is objectively "easier" — they filter different skill sets.
Does TES lead to the same Army officer career as NDA?
Yes — both are Permanent Commission Army officers with identical pay, promotion and pension rules after commissioning. The difference is entry route and initial training location.
Verdict
Choose TES if you are a PCM student with a competitive JEE Main score and are certain about Army technical arms. Choose NDA if you want all three services open, prefer the NDA academy experience, or do not want your entry tied to JEE cut-offs. Attempt both if your timeline allows.
