About the Thematic Apperception Test

The TAT is one of the three core psychology tests in the Indian Armed Forces SSB interview. You are shown 11 ambiguous black-and-white pictures plus 1 blank slide, and for each one you write a short story explaining what is happening, what led up to it, and the likely outcome. Assessors decode your stories to map your inner personality against the 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs).

⏱️ Timing

30 seconds to observe the picture, then 4 minutes to write your story. Total runtime ≈ 54 minutes.

🎯 What it measures

Effective Intelligence, Reasoning Ability, Initiative, Determination, Power of Expression and Social Adaptability.

✅ Do

Write a realistic hero close to your age, name a small but solvable problem, take initiative, and finish on a positive but believable note.

❌ Don't

Write super-heroic, supernatural, political, religious or violent stories. Avoid bookish moral lessons or rehearsed templates.

Sample Picture & Sample Story

A faded black-and-white photo of a young man standing alone near a window in the early morning. His expression is unclear — he could be worried, deciding, or simply waiting.

This is an illustrative example. Real test pictures are randomized from a secure pool.

Example response

"Rohan, 22, an engineering student, has just received news that his father's small workshop has caught fire. Standing by the window he quickly decides to take the next bus home. On the way he calls his elder sister to arrange the workshop's spare keys and the insurance papers. By evening Rohan reaches home, helps his father salvage the equipment, and over the next week re-opens the workshop with help from two neighbours. He resumes his studies the following month."
