NDA vs AFCAT — School vs Graduate Route to Defence (2026)

NDA and AFCAT are often compared by defence aspirants, but they serve different life stages. NDA is a UPSC exam after Class 12 leading to Permanent Commission in Army, Navy or Air Force. AFCAT is an IAF-conducted graduate exam opening Flying, Technical and Ground Duty branches. You cannot sit AFCAT before graduation; you cannot sit NDA after 19½. This page clarifies when each route applies and how SSB preparation overlaps.
NDA vs AFCAT — at a glance
| Attribute | NDA | AFCAT |
|---|---|---|
| When you can apply | Class 11–12 (age 16½–19½) | After graduation (age 20–26 depending on branch) |
| Conducting body | UPSC | Indian Air Force |
| Services / branches | Army, Navy, Air Force (Permanent) | IAF — Flying, Technical, Ground Duty |
| Written exam | Maths + GAT (English + GK) | 100 MCQs — English, GK, Reasoning, Numerical (+ EKT for Tech) |
| SSB type | Army/Navy/Air Force SSB or AFSB depending on preference | AFSB only (Dehradun, Mysuru, Gandhinagar, Varanasi) |
| Training | 3 years NDA + 1 year service academy | Training at AFA Dundigal or branch-specific schools |
| Commission | Permanent Commission | Mix — Flying often Permanent; many Ground/Tech branches SSC (14 years) |
| Typical timeline | Commissioned ~age 22 | Commissioned ~age 23–25 |
They are sequential, not competing — for most aspirants
If you are in Class 12, AFCAT is not an option yet. If you missed NDA by age, AFCAT becomes relevant only if your target is the Air Force. Comparing them is really about "defence after 12th" vs "IAF after graduation".
Air Force through NDA vs AFCAT
NDA-Air Force and AFCAT-Flying both end at AFSB, but NDA gives a 4-year academy pipeline and Permanent Commission. AFCAT-Flying is also Permanent but you enter as a graduate. AFCAT opens Ground Duty and Technical branches NDA does not.
SSB prep overlap
Psychology tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SD), PPDT screening and GTO tasks are identical in structure. AFSB assessors calibrate for air-force-specific motivation. If you attempted NDA SSB and now sit AFCAT, do not repeat NDA-specific PI answers — reframe for IAF.
Frequently asked questions
Is NDA harder than AFCAT?
NDA maths is tougher for a school student. AFCAT written is moderate for a graduate. SSB difficulty is comparable; AFSB recommendation rates depend on vacancies, not exam name.
If I clear NDA for Air Force, do I still need AFCAT?
No — NDA is a standalone entry. AFCAT is only for graduate IAF entries.
Can I attempt NDA first and AFCAT later?
Yes — many aspirants do exactly that if NDA age passes or they want IAF Ground Duty branches unavailable through NDA.
Verdict
Still in school and open to any service? Prepare for NDA now — it is the earliest Permanent Commission route. Graduated and committed to the Air Force? AFCAT (and CDS-AFA as backup) is your path. SSB preparation transfers between both — practise simulators and guides on ssbpractice.in regardless of entry.
