About the Picture Perception & Description Test
The PPDT is the very first test you attempt on Day 1 of the SSB screening stage. You are shown one hazy, ambiguous black-and-white picture for 30 seconds, then given 4 minutes to write a short story about it. Immediately afterwards you narrate your story in a group and take part in a Group Discussion (GD) where the group tries to arrive at a common story. PPDT + GD together decide whether you are screened in for the remaining four days.
⏱️ Timing
30 seconds to observe the picture, then 4 minutes to write your story. The GD that follows is offline and not simulated here.
🎯 What it measures
Perception, positive imagination, structured thinking, communication and — during the GD — team behaviour and Officer Like Qualities.
✅ Do
Write about a hero close to your own age and gender, describe the situation clearly, take a small practical action and finish on a positive but believable note.
❌ Don't
Don't force a hero character on hazy figures, avoid super-heroic, political, religious or violent themes, and don't over-describe the picture instead of telling a story.
