Name, age, qualification, current profession, and one line about the qualities you have picked up from him. Add one concrete example (a decision, a habit, a piece of advice) — that is what makes the answer memorable.

How is your relationship with your parents?

Describe it honestly — most families have both warmth and disagreements. Mention two things you admire and one area where opinions differ, and how you handle it.

What has your family sacrificed for you?

Give one or two concrete examples (financial choices, time investment, moving cities for education). Avoid tears or theatrical language. End with what you plan to give back.

Do you have any family member in the defence forces?

Answer factually. If yes, name the relationship, service, rank and how much interaction you have had. If no, mention if any friend/mentor from the forces influenced you — but only if genuine.

What are the daily household responsibilities you handle?

List 2–3 concrete recurring tasks (grocery, banking, dropping siblings, cleaning). Add one non-routine crisis you handled independently.

Why did you choose your current stream / course?

Frame it as a deliberate choice — aptitude + opportunity + long-term fit. Avoid answers like "everyone was doing it" or "my parents wanted it".

Your favourite subject and why?

Name the subject, one topic you enjoyed most, and why it engages you. Be ready for a technical follow-up — "explain X in simple terms".

Why did your marks drop in class 11 / 12 / any semester?

State the real reason (adjustment, health, sport commitments, wrong prioritisation). Follow with what you changed afterwards and the improvement it produced.

Who is your favourite teacher and why?

Name one teacher, the subject they taught, and one specific lesson (technical or life) they gave you. A concrete incident makes it real.

Have you ever been punished at school? For what?

Give one small honest example (talking in class, late submission). Explain what you learnt. Trying to claim you were never once punished sounds fake.

What are your hobbies?

Name only genuine hobbies you actively pursue. Ideally: one active (sport/outdoor), one intellectual (reading/chess), one creative (music/painting/writing). Avoid listing "watching movies" as a hobby.

When did you last pursue that hobby and how frequently?

Give the last date/week honestly. If you have not touched it in months, admit it and say why — do not fabricate a schedule.

Which sport do you play? Explain its rules.

Explain basic rules, positions, scoring, one famous player and one recent tournament. If it is a team sport, name your usual position and your team.

Name any five books you have read recently and their authors.

Name 3–5 books you have actually read. For each, know the author, genre, one main character or theme, and why you liked it. Do not name a book you have only seen the movie of.

Have you represented your school / college in any sport?

Answer factually with year, event and result. If you were captain, mention how you handled a team disagreement. If you never represented, admit it and say what stopped you.

What positions of responsibility have you held?

List each role with duration and one concrete outcome you drove — money raised, event conducted, problem solved. Titles without incidents feel hollow.

Describe a time you led a team through a difficult situation.

Use the STAR framework: Situation → Task → Action (your specific action, not the team's) → Result. Include one moment where you had to change plans mid-way.

What is your biggest achievement so far?

Pick one story — academic, sporting, social — that shows sustained effort and a measurable outcome. Explain what it demanded of you and what you learnt.

What is your biggest failure and what did you learn?

Choose a real failure (not humble-brag failures like "I work too hard"). Explain what you tried, why it did not work, what you changed and the outcome next time.

Which newspaper do you read? Today's top headlines?

Name the paper you actually read. Know today's top 3 headlines and be ready to discuss two of them in detail. Never name a paper you do not read.

What is your view on the current India–China border situation?

Give a balanced update — the region, recent developments, India's official position. Avoid political opinions, name-calling or war-mongering language.

Name three ongoing defence modernisation projects.

Mention 3 real, current projects (e.g., LCA Tejas Mk-2, Project-75I submarines, Rafale-M, S-400, IAC Vikrant / Vishal, indigenous drones). Know at least one line about each.

What is Agnipath / Agniveer scheme? Your views?

Factual explanation first: eligibility, tenure, retention percentage, benefits. Then a balanced view — acknowledge both intended benefits and criticisms. Avoid extreme positions.

Name the Chiefs of the three services.

Know the current CDS, COAS (Army), CNS (Navy), CAS (Air Force) — and the Defence Minister. Refresh this in the last 48 hours before the SSB.

Why do you want to join the armed forces?

Structure: (a) two personal reasons that connect to your background — a mentor, an incident, a value system; (b) one professional reason — leadership at a young age, adventure, dynamic career; (c) one national reason — service, contribution. Avoid clichés like "izzat" and "wardi".

Why this service specifically (Army / Navy / Air Force)?

Explain the specific appeal — Army: soldiering with troops, direct leadership; Navy: technology, seagoing, blue-water strategy; Air Force: aviation, technology, precision. Match this to your aptitude and interests.

What if you are not selected today — what next?

State clearly: analyse feedback, work on gaps, prepare for the next attempt while continuing current studies/job. Mention your backup plan — this shows maturity, not lack of commitment.

What are the ranks in the Indian Army / Navy / Air Force?

Learn all commissioned officer ranks in order, from Lieutenant to General (and their equivalents). Also know your entry's starting rank and probable rank at 10 and 20 years.

What is the difference between the SSB and other exams?

Written exams test knowledge; SSB tests personality against 15 OLQs. It is a 5-day interlinked assessment where every test cross-verifies the others. Highlight that SSB values honesty, not perfection.

What are the 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)?

Group them into 4 factors: Planning (effective intelligence, reasoning, organising ability, power of expression); Social adjustment (social adaptability, cooperation, sense of responsibility); Social effectiveness (initiative, self-confidence, speed of decision, ability to influence, liveliness); Determination (determination, courage, stamina).

Are you prepared for the physical hardship of forces life?

Answer with proof — describe your current fitness routine, sports you play, and any tough experiences (treks, camps, NCC). Do not just say "yes sir".

You have written that your strengths include leadership — give me a specific incident.

Situation → Task → Action → Result. Focus on your specific decisions, not the team's. Include one obstacle you overcame.

Describe your best and worst friend.

For best: 2–3 qualities and one incident of support. For worst: reframe as "the friend I disagree with most" — describe the difference and how you maintain the relationship despite it.

What are your weaknesses and how are you working on them?

Name 2 real weaknesses that are not disguised strengths. For each, describe the concrete step you are taking (course, habit tracker, mentor). Do not name a weakness that is disqualifying (e.g., "I panic in emergencies").

Who is your role model and why?

Choose someone genuinely (not compulsorily a military figure). Explain 2–3 specific qualities and how you are trying to inculcate them. Avoid generic answers like "my father" without a concrete example.

You see your best friend cheating in an exam — what do you do?

Do not report immediately (loyalty) but do not ignore it (integrity). Talk to the friend privately, understand the reason, help them prepare next time, and warn that continued cheating will force you to inform authority. The middle path is the safest.

You are trekking and a team member is injured — what do you do?

Assess injury → stabilise the injured person → assign one companion to stay with them → send a fast runner for help with location coordinates → mark the position → keep the rest of the group calm. Never abandon and never panic.

You are posted to a remote area with no leave for a year — how will you cope?

Acknowledge it will be hard for family. Frame your plan — routine, fitness, reading, learning the local language, engaging with community. Emphasise that this is part of the job you have signed up for, not an unexpected burden.

Your senior gives you an order you believe is wrong — what do you do?

Execute lawful orders even if you disagree. Raise your concern before execution if time permits, using the correct channel and respectful language. Never disobey publicly. If the order is unlawful (harming civilians, corruption) — that is the only exception, and it must go up the chain.

You seem too young / immature for this responsibility — comment.

Do not get defensive. Acknowledge you are young, then explain the responsibilities you already handle (family, academics, sport, PoR). End with your willingness to learn under senior officers.

I don't believe you did what you just claimed — convince me.

Stay calm. Give one specific verifiable detail (date, place, names, outcome). Offer to elaborate on any part. Never argue, never raise voice, never withdraw the claim if it is true.

Your answers so far seem rehearsed — are they?

Smile, acknowledge you did prepare (everyone does), but insist your answers reflect your genuine views and experiences. Offer to answer any unrehearsed question the IO wants to ask.

You failed the previous attempts. What makes you think you'll clear this time?

Do not make excuses. Identify the 1–2 gaps you have specifically worked on (fitness, GTO participation, current affairs, English). Show measurable progress. End with quiet confidence, not bravado.

What if I recommend you today but you don't clear the medicals?

State your immediate step — appeal / consult specialist / correct the condition if possible. Then your plan to reappear at the next opportunity. Show that a setback does not derail your long-term goal.
