Age and stage of life
NDA is aimed squarely at 16-to-19 year-olds still in Class 11–12. CDS opens up only after graduation. That five-year gap is the single biggest difference: NDA candidates commit to a defence career while still in school; CDS candidates convert to defence after a full college education and typically some professional experience.
Training length and where you end up
NDA gives you four years of academy training (3 years at Khadakwasla + 1 year at the service academy). CDS candidates go through 18 months at IMA (Army), AFA (Air Force), INA (Navy) or OTA (Short Service for Army). The longer NDA training is often argued to produce a deeper officer-culture grounding, though career growth after commissioning is broadly similar.
The written exam — much easier for CDS graduates
NDA maths is at Class 12 board-level difficulty and General Ability covers English + broad GK. CDS is significantly easier for a graduate — three shorter papers (English, GK, Elementary Maths). Aspirants who did not attempt or clear NDA in Class 12 often clear CDS comfortably 2–3 years later.
The SSB — identical for both
The 5-day SSB (Screening + Psychology + GTO + Personal Interview + Conference) is procedurally identical for NDA and CDS candidates. The GTO tasks, TAT, WAT, SRT, PPDT, SD and Personal Interview are the same. The difference is subtle — assessors calibrate slightly for age at NDA (more raw potential, less life experience) versus CDS (more articulated life experience, less flexibility).
