Coorg Camp — Fire Line & Lost Cadet — SSB GPE Practice

SSB Group Planning Exercise (GPE) illustration — candidates studying a schematic map and writing a 10-minute group plan around a GTO table.

The map

Same idea as the printed sketch on the GTO table. Gold = pucca, dashed = kaccha, blue = water, pine clumps = village. Read kilometres before you divide the group.

The GTO’s narration

You are a group of persons as many as you are, NCC cadets at a forest camp on a two-day trek in Coorg. At 16:10 smoke was seen on the east ridge. You have two fire beaters, 10 litres of water, one torch, a whistle, 20 metres of rope for the ford, and a forest-guard wireless at the check post. The fire is a ground fire; wind is from the west; camp tents are downwind if it jumps the ford. Cadet Rao left for the temple clearing at 15:00 and has not returned; he has no torch. A villager at the check post claims two men with a gun near the ridge — unverified. If you stay on the east bank past 18:00 the ford is unsafe without a rope team. Civil twilight is 18:05. You are not the fire service. Do not hunt poachers. Nobody walks alone after 17:00. Now the time is 16:15 hrs. As brave young men/lady what will you do.

10 minutes — write your plan on paper

Start the clock, look at the map, write priorities, who goes where, and clock times. Nothing is typed on this page.

A complete GPE solution (for comparison)

This is one workable plan, not the only plan. The GTO wants a split group, life before duty, and no invented resources. Compare after you write.

Priority of problems

  1. 1. Life — lost cadet Rao toward the temple (TM).
  2. 2. Property / camp — hold a ground fire line on the camp side of the ford (ER / FD).
  3. 3. Duty — inform the guard by wireless (fire + missing + rumour) (CP).
  4. 4. Duty — everyone west of the ford by 17:45 (FD).

Distance and time (from the map)

  • Camp → ford: 1 km kaccha.
  • Ford → east ridge: 2 km kaccha.
  • Ford → check post: 3 km kaccha.
  • Camp → temple: 2 km kaccha.

What the group actually does

  1. Party A (3 + whistle/torch) toward the temple on the known path at 16:16. Call every two minutes. Nobody splits off alone.
  2. Party B (1) to the check post wireless — fire, missing cadet, poacher rumour for the guard / 101. He does not go to the ridge.
  3. Party C (3 + beaters) hold a wet line on the camp side of the ford. Withdraw if flame height grows. You beat ground fire, not a crown fire.
  4. All parties west of the ford by 17:45. Rope across if Rao is found late. RV at camp.

Close: Missing man before fire-heroics. Wireless, not a poacher hunt. Ford is a hard time gate at 17:45.
